Hippopotamus
The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), often referred to as the "river horse," is one of Africa’s most iconic animals. Despite their bulky appearance, hippos are semi-aquatic creatures that spend much of their time in rivers and lakes. Their large bodies are perfectly adapted for life in the water, and they can hold their breath for up to five minutes.
Hippos are herbivores, feeding on grasses at night. Despite their plant-based diet, they are highly territorial and aggressive, making them one of Africa’s most dangerous animals. They play a vital role in their ecosystems by creating pathways in aquatic vegetation and fertilizing the water with their dung.
Habitat loss and poaching for ivory and meat threaten hippo populations. Conservation efforts focus on protecting their habitats and reducing human-wildlife conflict.
