Hedgehog
The hedgehog is a small, nocturnal mammal known for its spiky coat of quills. Found in Europe, Asia, and Africa, hedgehogs are insectivores, feeding on a diet of beetles, worms, and other small invertebrates. Their keen sense of smell and hearing helps them locate prey during their nightly foraging trips.
Hedgehogs are solitary animals, curling into a tight ball when threatened, using their quills for defense. They play an essential role in controlling pest populations and contribute to soil health by aerating it while foraging.
Despite their ecological importance, hedgehogs face threats from habitat loss, pesticides, and road traffic. Creating hedgehog-friendly gardens and protecting their natural habitats are simple yet effective ways to support their populations.
